That Professor Goddard, with his “chair” in Clark College and the countenancing of the Smithsonian Institution, does not know the relation of action to reaction, and of the need to have something better than a vacuum against which to react-to say that would be absurd. But some predictions are doomed due to a simple lack of understanding of known science. Michelson cannot be seriously faulted: he was basing his statement on the available scientific knowledge of his era. Both theories transformed our understanding of physics and the universe, leading to new insights that to this day are still not fully understood. Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity describes how the motion of objects is very different when the relative speed of the objects is close to the speed of light, and quantum mechanics describes how the behavior of both light and matter on extremely small scales is very different from what we see in everyday life. Michelson said, “The more important fundamental laws and facts of physical science have all been discovered, and these are so firmly established that the possibility of their ever being supplanted in consequence of new discoveries is exceedingly remote.”1 Michelson made this statement in 1899 within a few years, however, the introduction of the special theory of relativity and of quantum mechanics would completely upend this view of physics.
